A basque flavor
EI2 and Passmed students bid farewell to the month of May by visiting the Basque Country in Spain. It was a remarkable experience, one that will be permanently engraved in our minds and deeply cherished in our hearts. Indeed, we visited a marvelous place that had many things to learn from. During this journey, we wondered what was special about this city, about this country. What was the Basque Country’s noticeable trademarks?
To identify these landmarks, we need to shed light on many aspects. Among them, their “taste” for sports is quite unusual. They have their own popular sport called the “Basque pelota”. It is a sport that none of us knew about but we had a try and are glad we discovered it. In addition, the pedestrian signals were incredibly original. It actually showed a clock indicating pedestrians when it will turn red or green. We also have to mention that the Basque country has two official languages, which is quite stunning. The two languages are Spanish and Basque, a language of unknown origins. Therefore, everything and every sign is written in Basque and Spanish.
We noticed that socially speaking, the Basques are different; they are friendly and helpful, even with us who could not utter a correct sentence in Spanish (most of them could not speak English or French which made communication even harder). They are lovely people and we can definitely say that we were welcomed with open arms.
In addition, we have to mention the fact that the Basque police is independent from the Spanish one. They have their own forms, uniforms, and rules (e.g. its officers must speak Basque).
Finally, architecture in the Basque country is amazing. Tunnels are very well built, buildings are beautiful and parks are beyond standards.
In conclusion, this trip taught us a lot about this unique place. We all had our share of fun and we are more than glad this trip was organized for us. We’re very thankful and would love to visit the Basque country again if we ever have a chance.

Guggenheim Museum, a masterpiece
The Guggenheim Museum is one of the most famous museums in the world; not only for its art, but also for its architecture.
Its architecture is really uncommon. The first noticeable thing when one sees the museum is the peculiar shape of its walls and roof. It looks like a ship and is made of titanium tiles that are a little bit shiny. It feels like the building is teasing you and one really wonders what it looks like inside and how it is organized.
Once you enter the museum, you discover a very strange and unusual architecture. There are curves everywhere and nothing is straight, not even the walls which are not vertical. We can guess building this museum was a difficult task, but it gives real character and soul to it. The further you walk into the museum, the more you discover unusual rooms. We can definitely say that the building is a masterpiece; and of course, it also contains some amazing pieces. They were made by artists from all over the world and they are all modern art. We did like the visit except for a room on the first floor at the beginning of the visit where we saw steel structures that meant nothing to us. Most of them were hard to understand.
In conclusion, it was very interesting but some of the pieces were weird.

! Hola tecnalia!
Monday morning, we went to visit Tecnalia Robotiker. This company focuses on innovation, R&D and sustainable environment. It has a staff of 1,500 employees, 25% of whom are engineers and 20% of whom are doctors. Tecnalia is actually composed of 3 branches: one in France, one in Germany and one in Bilbao (which we visited).
Before the visit of the workshop, the manager made a short presentation on the characteristics and relevant figures of the structure. Then we were separated in small groups, and each group was accompanied by an engineer who presented us the machines and processes. The first one was the camera analyzer that can scan a three dimensional piece, quickly make a model of a complex shape, automatically grab a piece with programmable automates and find defaults. The second one was a very powerful laser developed to polish plastic and metal without destroying the pieces.
This visit was interesting and gave us a chance to discover a great company and its methods to innovate and develop new technologies. We would like to thank tecnalia staff for welcoming and presenting us their company.

AIC
The AIC, which stands for Automotive Intelligence Agency is located in the East of Bilbao, the most active industrial zone of the whole of Spain.
This agency aims at gathering all the R&D departments of the major makes of the automotive industry in order to be more competitive on the European, Asian and American markets.
This two year old program offers companies to use spare parts and other resources to work on and improve by themselves or together.
The first amazing that we saw when we entered the building is the size of the building. It felt like a sci-fi movie with huge rooms, corridors and doors. It was beautiful and we had an overwhelming feeling of space that clearly matched the slogan of the AIC: “humanity at work”.
After a short presentation video in a modern projection room, we met a researcher from the University of Bilbao who presented us an electric car. The aim was to create a model of this car and use it as a simulation and validation tool.
In a nutshell, an amazing visit!
